Isle of Wight Two Day Stage Cycle Race

White Oak Tri Squad was represented by no less than 5 club members at the weekend at the Isle of Wight 2 day stage cycle race. We had Colette racing in the womens event and Gary Bryant, Nigel Ling, Guy Little, and Matthew Swift teaming up in the mens event. Support was provided by Nigel's better half, Carrie.

The event took place over 3 very hilly stages of 73 miles on Saturday, 63 miles on Sunday morning and finally an 8 mile time trial in the afternoon. For Colette the tactics were simple: stay in with the boys until no more women remained. For us boys we knew the event would be decided on the final time trial. Gary's been kicking serious butt at
time-trialling recently so we decided before the race that our tactics would be to keep Gary as fresh as possible during the first 2 stages and wear down all his potential rivals with constant attacking and counter attacking from the rest of us. That way, he'd have the best chance possible of putting in the race-winning performance.

To cut a long story short, we did just that! Colette won all three of her stages (!) and Gary, as hoped, produced the goods (and fine goods they were too!) in the final TT.

Result: two yellow jerseys!

Matt

Austrian Ironmen

Congatulations to Marcus Smith (9:59:40), Mark Borland (11:20:25), Paul Atkinson (11:52:18), Dominic Course (12:30:39), Jel Utting, Alex Tyrrel and Mick Andrews, who obvious helped each other along (12:49:34-47), John Setford (12:56:06) and Ray Evans (13:41:05) for completing Ironman Austria.

UCI World 'B' championships

Colette Swift competed, as a member of the Irish team, in the UCI World 'B' championships this weekend (6th July). The "B" means that the championships aren't the Elite World Championships but are instead aimed at countries that haven't developed the sport that much, of which Ireland is one. It gives these countries a chance to demonstrate any potential talent they have and, if successful, qualify for places in the 2004 Olympics! Click here for more information.
Colette rode in the women's road race (100.8km) and finished 18th in 2.59.05, just under 5 minutes down on the winners who were all Chinese. Click here for the full results. Unfortunately the Irish women's team had to finish in the top 9 to qualify, and only managed 11th, so Colette won't be going to Athens.

Weymouth Middle Distance

In the words of Dominic Course - "Weymouth got harder this year. The swim was longer, choppy and crab-infested; the bike was longer with more hills and a "had-to-pedal-downhill" wind; and the run was very hot. "
Well done to Marcus Smith, Dominic Course, Mark Borland, Paul Fisher, Mary-Anne Course, Helyn Hiscock, Trevor Mcllroy and Ray Evans for their efforts on Sunday. Click here for results.

6th April

Ardingly Sprint Triathlon -There were 5 club members braving the cold at Ardingly Sprint Triathlon. Well done to Helyn who was 3rd Lady to finish, and Guy for his 21st overall. Mark Borland, Paul Fisher and John Setford also raced. Click here to view the full results.

Powerman was tough, the first run was a bit long - probably more like 8 miles and a very rolling course so imagine trying to run 8 miles around, say, the Southwater relays run course and you get the picture. The bike was again a rolling type course, with a few steep climbs, which probably helped because you were not always on tri bars and you were using different sets of muscles and is less strain on the lower back. The second run was similar to the first run but only 5 miles. I finished with a time of 3 hours 10 minutes - Marcus

Paris Marathon- Well done to Alex Tyrrell finished the Paris Marathon just missing out on a PB at 3:22.
