Holybourne Hillraiser - Race Report

Friday, 20th December 2002

At 8.30am on Saturday 30th November, the first rider set off up Holybourne

Hill for the second edition of the Holybourne Hillraiser, in Holybourne, Hampshire.

(Seen here at the Christmas Party)

The race involves a 20mile, 3 lap bike route which commences with an ascent of Holybourne Hill with cyclists setting off in the style of a Time Trial. At the conclusion of the bike leg competitors face a multi terrain run. Thanks to the heavy rain in the week leading into the race, a layer of mud on much of the hill added to the difficulties of the ascent for those who wandered from the car tyre tracks.

The conditions certainly favouring those who could spin their way up the climb. Despite the conditions some very fast bike splits were posted, with three riders managing to go under the hour. The fastest of who was Ian White with 57:35. Helyn Hiscock was the fastest lady on the bike.

The rain had also left its mark on the run course with sections of the off road leg being deep in mud and slippery under foot. Ian White followed up his excellent bike performance though with the fastest run split to secure 1st place.

Natasha Swam posted the fastest run split among the ladies making up 4minutes on Helyn. However Helyn stayed out in front to secure 1st place.

Next years race will be held on Saturday 29th November (subject to sanction). Entries will be limited to 60 next year and booking your place early is recommended as this years was oversubscribed.
