White Oak Tri Club Relays
We are running our own relays at the Dartford Lake on Sunday 5th September. All members are welcome to take part. Please let John have your details if you wish to be included. We will also be holding the annual club BBQ on sunday afternoon afterward the relays at Tanya's house. We would be glad to see all WO tri club members and their families from 14:00. Please let Tanya know if you plan to attend so she can arrange for sufficient food and drink.

This week's rides
On Wednesday (1st) there will be a beginners group and a club ride starting at 18:30; on Thursday (2nd) there will be a 25 mile ride starting at 18:30; on Saturday (4th) there will be a 25 mile ride starting at 10:00. All rides start from Princes Park.
If anyone wants company on another ride this weekend just put out an email on the e-group.
Dorney Lake
Well done to Tanya Brightwell on her 3rd female finish at the Mid-week Dorney Lake Triathlon (18/08) and to Vincent Balzan on his 1:08:20 time for the Big South Swim.
2011 Spring Cycle Tour
The 2011 Spring Cycle Tour is planned for the weekend of 13th-15th May and will be in Brugge, Belgium. Graham has negotiated a group rate of 95 euros per room per night on a B&B basis. The Hotel is a traditional Belgium hotel, all the rooms are different, and the Hotel boasts its own bar and restaurant next door. Permission has been given to keep our bikes in the rooms for safety.
There currently two options for the travel:
Option 1, Park the cars at Dover, go over as foot passengers, then cycle the 60 miles, via canal paths to Brugge, with a couple of back up vehicles for baggage, and for people who do not wish to pack in too much mileage.
Option 2, drive over as in previous years, only 60 miles, the only drawback, parking in Brugge Centre is quite expensive at about 20 euros per day.
The Rides ! - Flat as a pancake if you want it that way (which we probably won't). The city of Gent only 35 miles away, and the coast at Zebrugge, to the north only 25 miles away, canal paths with no traffic, or quiet roads. Graham says he can even seek out some of the infamous cobbles.
The Format - If we cycle over to Brugge, then we will have to cycle back to Dunkirk so 2 days at 60 miles. The Saturday ride is likely to be 80 miles, so a massive total for the weekend of 200 miles. There is also a leisurely ride around the canal paths of the City planned for friday afternoon /eve.
The Saturday ride will be planned so all the group can get back together at tea stops and lunch breaks, and hopefully all complete the distance.

Congratulations to Carrie and Nigel on the birth of their son Ellis. More details and perhaps a photo when available.

Outlaw triathlon
Unfortunately Martin had to pull out of the ironman distance Outlaw triathon due to a problem with one of his eyes; he was taken to A&E and has been refered to an eye specialist. We wish him well. Martin has dedicated his efforts to the memory of his very good freind, Andy Horton. " with your support, we can raise some money for the Stroke Association so that one day we may eradicate this terrible illness." Click here to visit Martin's just giving page .

Andy Horton

Andy's funeral is at 1pm on Friday 30th July at Garden of England Cremetorium, Sheppey Way, Bobbing, Nr Sittingbourne, Kent, ME9 8GZ.......and afterwards at Gillingham FC in their main function suite. The room is booked until 12 midnight.
The dresscode requested for the funeral by Jane and the family is normal seasonal for a social event and definitely NOT black. They are very keen that everyone should feel comfortable and while they understand that some people may like to dress conservatively, an 'Andy Horton Shirt' (for those who know what that means!) would not be inappropriate either.
Regarding flowers, the club is sending an wreath and if anyone would like to make a donation to charity we will be joining with Dartford Road Runners; Jane suggested they nominate their own charity for memorial donations and I understand they are looking at the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. Click here to go to the justgiving website. (However, there are no rules, if someone would really like to make an individual floral tribute, then they may do so). Please send your own personal cards, therefore allowing your personal tributes to Andy and messages to the family.
There is a memorial page on this site for tributes to Andy and DRRs are going to organise one on their site. If you would like to submit a tribute, photograph or any other comments please send them to webmaster@whiteoaktri.co.uk. Click here to view the memorial page.

Andy's closest family is his Stepfather Ernie, His sisters Claire and Kelly. Most of all his two daughters Ashleigh (16) and Olivia (12) and their mum Bridget. Equally his partner Jane who was with Andy throughout his final days from finding him at home to the finish, and has been extremely strong and thoughtful throughout balancing her personal grief and trauma with understanding the need of Andy's many many friends to be kept informed.
A question a lot of people ask is "what happened".... it sometimes feels insensitive to either ask or tell, but in fact it is a normal human thing to want to know and understand. To help meet this and to avoid unnecessary speculation, the most comprehensive information we have (and to be honest I don't think we really need any more).... is that Andy suffered a stroke at home and collapsed, he was found sometime later by his partner Jane, who had missed his normal texts and e-mails. The house was broken into when it became apparent that Andy was in there but unable to help himself. Rushed to hospital Andy was able to communicate at first through hand squeezes and was therefore aware of his loved ones in his last moments of consciousness. From this point his condition deteriorated, in spite of his move to a specialist hospital in central London for essential surgery. Following surgery there were no signs of recovery, and he finally slipped away on Saturday morning at 6.15am.

Open water swim training
Due to a safety issue at the lake recently additional regulations have been introduced for swim training at the lake on Monday evenings. Everyone must sign in BEFORE entering the lake and wear a brightly coloured swim hat. Anyone found to have swum without signing in will be barred from using the lake for the rest of the year. Any swimmer that has not swum at the Dartford lake previously will need to be assessed prior to being allowed to swim on their own. Any swimmers that are not confident can request a more experienced swimmer accompanies them on their swim. Safety guidelines will be on display at the lake. Please read them and help us to keep everyone safe. Click here to view a map of the lake's location.

Open water swim training

Spring cycle tour - Dieppe
The travel arrangements are: Sea France, leaving Dover to Calais on the 08.15 ferry on Friday 14th May; arrive at Calais at 10.30 am, arrive Dieppe 13.00. Return Calais to Dover, on the 18.50 ferry on Sunday 16th May; arrive Dover 19.50, home by 21.00.
On Saturday there will be a choice of two rides: a 46 mile ride or a 96 mile ride. Both routes go out along the D1 towards Neufchatel en Brai. This has always been a popular route on all our previous tours, and by extending it, Graham is confident of making it a great ride. Neufchatel at 23 miles is the perfect stopping place. The cobbled high street rises out of the town with several cafes and restaurants, also a bike shop should you need one. Those on the 46 miler may wish to sit a while at Neufchatel and return to Dieppe via the river valley. From here the 96 miler continues on to Gourmey en Brai where there will be a lunch stop before heading back, joining the shorter route at about 76 miles, then follow the river valley back to Dieppe. Both routes are flat to rolling and do not have any killer hills, the total climbing for the big ride only 1850ft in total and the short ride only 900 ft.
